Book Description : When 12-year-old Thomas, seventh son of a seventh son, is apprenticed to the local Spook, whose job is to fight evil spirit and witches, he expects a life of danger. However, the boy doesn't realize just how soon he'll face a powerful enemy alone, as Mother Malkin escapes her confinement while the Spook is away. Thomas is forced to use his wits, and the help of his enigmatic new friend, Alice, to fight the evil witch. And defeating her is only the start of the boy's problems. (from School Library Journal)

My Thoughts : I did enjoy this book immensely.
It was eerie, creepy, and dark in a very good way.
And I don't think I've liked a main character this much when he is only expected to be a boy of 13 years old.  He was thoughtful and brave in a way you might think an actual 13 year old boy would've wrote the book.

I liked how the author kept leaving hints of events for the books to come, guessing what it might become of this person and their secret just made me wanna keep on reading.
And I thought the characters were one of the most 'down to earth' people I've read in a fantasy book. Very realistic and believable, LOVED all of them! good and bad!

And of course the illustration!
I love books with appropriate illustrations!
Just like The City of Dreaming Books and The Graveyard Bookit wasn't so much that it would ruin your imagination either. Very in tune with the story and wonderful in a way.

I'm definately checking out the second book of this series.
